Parts of Speech
Noun is a
part of speech that names people, things and phenomena. It answers questions
Who? What?
E.g. people: Eugene, Amy;
things: table, pen;
phenomena: thunder, wind.
Verb is a
part of speech that expresses action or state. E.g. action: work; state: have.
Adjective is
a part of speech that modifies a noun or pronoun. It answers question: What
kind? E.g. beautiful, bright, yellow.
Adverb is
a part of speech that modifies verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or the whole
sentence. It answers questions: How? Where? When? Why? How long? How often?
etc.
E.g. She runs fast. (How? The adverb modifies the verb.)
She is very beautiful. (How? The adverb modifies the adjective.)
I do not feel very well. (How? The adverb "very" modifies the adverb
"well".)
Fortunately,
I had car insurance. (The adverb "fortunately" modifies the whole
sentence.)
Pronoun is
a part of speech that substitutes a noun (or adjective). It answers questions:
What? Who? What kind? Whose?
E.g. He, she, it, who, that, this, her, their etc.
Preposition
is a part of speech that shows relationships between words.
E.g. on, in, between, at, towards, etc.
Conjunction
is a part of speech that connects words and parts of a sentence.
E.g. And, or, but, so, while, etc.
Article is
a part of speech that defines a noun.
E.g. a(an), the.
Numeral is
a part of speech that names numbers.
E.g. one, first, one hundred and fifty, etc.
Interjection
is a part of speech that expresses emotions without naming them.
E.g. Oops! Ugh! Ouch!
