ESL Level -5 Class Organization and Assignments

El Monte - Rosemead Adult School (Ramona Center)

Spring 2024

1. Course Materials: Textbook: Future 5 Student’s Book and Workbook; Supplemental materials: Weaving It Together 2; Read This! (Reading materials); American Headway 3 English Grammar (3^rd Edition) by B. S. Azar. Can You Believe It? (Idioms) by

L. Huizenga.

2. Grading system: A –excellent, B- good, C- satisfactory, D- not satisfactory. For everyday attendance, rules, and assignments, students will get + or -.

3. Expectations: Upon successful completion of the ESL Level – 5 Course, students will be presented with the Certificate of Completion of the ESL Level 5 Course. To complete the course successfully, students are expected to follow the classroom rules, attend the class 80 % of the time, get 80% of “+” pluses for everyday participation, and complete the student portfolio that includes the written assignments described below.

4. Rules:

·        Attendance. In order to receive the Certificate of Completion, students are expected to attend at least 80% of the time.

·        Speak only English in the classroom.

·        Cell phones should be set into silent mode.

·        No chewing gum.

·       Complete the assignments in a timely manner.

5. Assignments for the Portfolio:

Essays:

• Compare and contrast essay (one).

Reading/Comprehension:

• Reading/Comprehension check (two). Rendering (summary) of a story.
• Book report (one).
• Resume and Cover Letter

Tests:

• EL Civics Tests
• CASAS Tests
• Progress Test (Final)
